Connect a local rate of change to the steps used to adjust a model.
BIZNIQUE / CALCULUS / 42
Connect a local rate of change to the steps used to adjust a model.
THE IDEA
A derivative describes how a function changes near a point. In several variables, a gradient collects partial derivatives. The tangent in this example shows the local linear behaviour of f(x) = x²/4.
f′(x) = local rate of change
A local slope does not describe a function everywhere. A large proposed step can leave the region where the local approximation is useful.
TRY IT YOURSELF
For f(x) = x²/4, what is the derivative at x = 2?
f′(x) = x/2, so the derivative at 2 is 1.
