BIZNIQUE / MATHEMATICAL OPTIMISATION / 57
Move a resource boundary and watch the best feasible point change.
THE IDEA
The unconstrained target is (3, 2). The example requires nonnegative x and y and limits x+y to a budget b. When the budget is below 5, the optimum lies on the budget boundary; above 5, that constraint no longer binds.
Minimise (x−3)² + (y−2)²
A numerical answer is meaningful only for the model actually specified. Check feasibility, objective units, omitted constraints and whether discrete decisions need an integer formulation.
TRY IT YOURSELF
For b = 3, what is the best feasible point in this example?
The point is (2, 1), with objective value (2−3)² + (1−2)² = 2.
