BIZNIQUE / LINEAR ALGEBRA / 34
A model connects assumptions to a prediction
Move a coefficient and inspect both the fitted line and the observations it misses.

THE IDEA
A model maps inputs to outputs using a stated family of relationships. In this example the intercept is fixed at zero and the slope changes. The residuals show the discrepancies between observed and predicted values.
ŷ = wx + b
A good-looking fit on observed data is not an independent test of prediction. Also check assumptions, data quality, uncertainty and performance on suitable held-out cases.
TRY IT YOURSELF
If every predicted value is too high by the same amount, which part of a linear model could address that pattern?
An intercept adjustment can shift every prediction by the same amount, though the cause should still be investigated.
